We have been here at Camp Pendleton for almost 10 years. We have heard the rumors about the wild bison herd (and saw one by the road once on Mother's Day several years ago), but have never ventured deep into the back country to see them. Several recent news articles piqued my interest, and after a few weeks of waiting, we got the all clear from the Game Warden today.

First you take a dirt road off the main route, and then begin to climb the steep hills...the view is beautiful. You can see off to Fallbrook and out to the ocean.

Signs that we are getting closer...hoofprints, trampled reeds at the watering hole, and ...umm..."evidence."

Finally, we saw them up on a ridge! There were a couple of calves...cute!

It was so cool to see them. I wanted to get out of the car and walk up a bit closer, but I was encouraged to stay put. Probably a better idea. If anyone wants to come for a visit, and the timing is right, I would go back again in a heartbeat!
