It has been heartbreaking to see how many hundreds of people have lost their homes. Three other hospitals have been evacuated and we are very busy at work. It struck home for me twice this week, working with new mommies who had given birth while evacuated from their homes. One found out in the hospital that she had no home to go to upon discharge. I just feel for these families who should be experiencing such profound joy and happiness at the birth of their babies, but it is mixed with fear and sorrow from the devastation these fires have brought.
On a brighter note, I am amazed at the kindness and generosity of those people in San Diego. From shelters and volunteers, to donations, it is just unbelievable. I have also been impressed with TriCity (the hospital where I work). Because of the extra workload, and shortage of staff, many people have been working long hours. The hospital has also set up a childcare center and pet care area for us on site. When I had to work this week, and was nowhere near comfortable leaving my kids at home, my boss encouraged me to bring them in. They were a bit old for the make-shift day care center, but my boss allowed them to be on the Labor & Delivery floor with me. :)
At some of the darkest moments, people shine brightly.
