Day 2, the kids and I boarded the tram that takes you all over the city - a good way to see everything quickly. A motorcade drove by on its way to the Capitol and the tram driver told us you can tell the President from the VP's motorcade by looking for EMS. No ambulance, so it must have been the VP.
We met Tim and our dear friend Jill at the Lincoln Monument and she hung out with us for a bit (I would say "we went out to lunch" but in all honesty it was a hot dog from a street vendor). It was fun to catch up and made us look forward to spending more time with her and her kids later in the week.
After the monuments, we hopped the shuttle to Arlington. We were in the cemetary for a short time because "an important dignitary was visiting." So we saw the Tomb of the Unknown, and other important gravesites, then headed out of the cemetary. As we walked over to the Iwo Jima Memorial, a security guard yelled at us to stay off the street. Just then, we saw a motorcade start up the drive to the cemetary...a presidential motorcade WITH ambulance! The kids were excited to realize that the President was literally just a few feet from us. (Later that night, we saw on the news that President Obama was there with some visiting dignitaries to lay a wreath at the Tomb.) I kept trying to explain to the kids that it is rare to see the Presidential motorcade that close and how lucky we were to see both the P and VP in one day!
We ended the evening by meeting my friend Jess and her new husband for dinner. They recently moved out here from Oceanside. Great to see them!
All in all, a busy, fun-filled day! The only bummer is that somehow my photos from the day were deleted. Thank goodness Kelsey had her camera along...
